Like so many of you, I sat up watching the State of the Union address last night. We all had our scorecards - the things we wanted to hear about laced in among the things we were pleasantly surprised to hear about. Personally, I think the strong language on climate issues, the commitment to equal pay for women and the emotional plea on gun control were all highlights. The overriding thought I had as I watched last night was a memory of 10 years ago. In 2003, I wasn't watching my twitter screen. Instead, I was in the office, sitting around a pizza box with Mark Dybul and my other colleagues at what then was called DATA (and now has become the ONE Campaign).

This February contains a plethora of important events - almost too many to name. There’s Valentine’s Day, the start of the new Congress, the State of the Union Address and several significant opportunities to look back and honor those who have come before us, including celebrations for American History and American Black History month. February is also dedicated to heart health so Every Mother Counts is spending this month focused on matters of the heart. Because women are at the heart of all of these events and because we’ve worked hard to attain our place in history, we’re especially focused this month on keeping women at the heart of the political process.

You know what we love. Making pregnancy and childbirth safe for moms everywhere. And we know you do too. So, on this Valentine's Day, what's the easiest way you can share the love today? Help us spread the word that hundreds of thousands of mothers still die every year from pregnancy and childbirth related causes.

First of all, let us tell you how much we admire you and appreciate how hard you work. It’s tough keeping a household together for the long haul and we know some of your relationships in the House are going through a rough patch. Really, we know what you’re going through so we want to offer you a little advice. Some arguments just aren’t worth fighting because the evidence is so highly stacked on one side, that it’s obvious who is right. And sometimes when you lay the arguments down and simply agree to do the right thing, like in the case of passing the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), everyone wins. In fact, giving in and doing the right thing goes a long way towards healing troubled relationships.

A story appeared in the New York Post that presents a tragic opportunity to discuss maternal mortality right here in America. You’d think since we spend more per capita on healthcare than any country on earth, we’d have the best maternal mortality rate, but according to Amnesty International, we rank 50th. Stories like this one about a young woman who died after delivering her first child demonstrates some of the reasons why too many women die in America. It also demonstrates how desperately important the Maternal Health Accountability Act is to preventing other senseless pregnancy-related deaths.

I moved to the United States from England some 23 years ago and quickly became accustomed to the surprised response I would receive from people when I told them I was a midwife. “Midwives are still around? I had no idea!” That was a common retort back then, yet even today as the acceptance of midwives is once again on the rise, there remains that element of wonder and intrigue surrounding a profession that has served womankind for millennia.

The last time I traveled to Tanzania back in 2009 was with Christy and our film crew as co-producer of "No Woman, No Cry.” We spent two weeks with local pregnant women, including Janet and Lightness, and their caregivers at Ol Doinyo Sambu, Rahel and Hertha. My many memories from this trip include sleeping next to my cell phone waiting for the late night labor calls, driving pregnant women over bumpy roads to and from the local clinic and hospital, witnessing a cesarean (which was my first birth experience), carrying heavy film equipment up dusty mountains and being offered a chicken in gratitude for the work we were doing. Despite the difficulty in organizing the shoot, I am excited to be returning to Tanzania this week.

We’ll be watching the State of the Union address tonight with our ears strained for news about how Obama intends to address issues pertaining to women, foreign affairs and healthcare. All of these issues (and so many others) have a direct impact on our mission to improve maternal health and reduce maternal mortality worldwide.

It’s Random Acts of Kindness week – a seven-day opportunity to be nicer than nice and kinder than normal. The hope is that everyone catches the pay-it-forward vibe and kindness spreads like warm honey. We’re hoping our readers will spend this week dispensing kindness on mothers, women, girls and well, anybody else you see that needs a little extra lovin’.

Yes, ‘Every Heart Counts’! Yet, in pregnancy and birth, where more often than not a straightforward course can be anticipated for low-risk healthy women, we don’t talk much about heart health. We all know that we should have our blood pressure checked during pregnancy. We know it is an indication of the health of the mother, yet before and between pregnancies young women are not educated about the importance of knowing their blood pressure reading or checking their cholesterol or triglyceride levels. In fact in America, most women of childbearing age don’t even go to the doctor unless they are already pregnant.
