There’s no guaranteed method for leaving addictions behind, but two people we know used a not-so-secret weapon to reinforce their determination to be well. Christy gave up smoking 20 years ago through her journey with yoga. Nikki Myers left multiple addictions behind by combining 12-steps with yoga. Today, both women credit long-standing yoga practices for keeping them strong, centered and focused on living life well.

It’s not new information that smoking is horrible for your health and cigarettes and developing babies don’t mix. Smoking causes cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory disease. It’s linked to infertility, gum disease and rapid aging. It compromises pregnancies and is a contributor to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, childhood asthma and other just plain nasty health conditions. So why on earth does anyone still smoke? Plain and simple, people smoke for pleasure and because they’re addicted. These factors affect men and women all over the world from all demographics, cultures, races, and socioeconomic groups.

Senator John Kerry (D-Mass) had the tables turned on him today. After 29 years as part of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today he sat facing the dais (instead of behind it) at his confirmation hearing as Obama’s nominee for Secretary of State. It’s his long history and expertise in foreign policy and national security and his deep understanding that those issues mean more than military presence that makes us confident he will be confirmed, will carry the torch so elegantly carried by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and will be leader we need in the world today.

Last week we closed out our Mozilla Firefox Challenge with a really nice, $17,152 total. What does that mean for mothers who need us? That means your donations will buy 780 Mama kits for women in Uganda. What is a Mama kit? A Mama kit contains the basic supplies a woman needs to deliver safely. In many parts of the world, women are expected to supply their own medical equipment, especially if they’re delivering at home or bring money to pay for the use of a clinic’s supplies.

Washington DC saw the celebration of the 57th Presidential Inauguration over the long weekend, which also happened to be Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s 84th birthday. The District was packed with visitors from around the county and around the world and a few Every Mother Counts’ staff members were there to see history in the making.

The World Health Organization says that 50,000 to 100,000 women worldwide are affected by obstetric fistula every year and approximately 2 million women around the world (primarily in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa) live with fistula. Fistula is directly linked to one of the four major causes of maternal mortality: obstructed labor.

We really love the work Healing Hands of Joy (HHOJ) is doing to help women dealing with fistula in Ethiopia and we love that they use a multi-dimensional approach. HHOJ puts former fistula patients in rural Ethiopia back on their feet by training them to be safe maternal health ambassadors. We also love their new awareness and fundraising campaign – Film Fights Fistula. Thanks to the support of the PBS award-winning science series, NOVA, supporters can host their own screening of the Emmy Award winning Documentary, A Walk To Beautiful, which follows five Ethiopian women who suffer from fistula as they seek a cure.

Next week marks the 40th anniversary of Roe versus Wade, the US Supreme Court’s landmark decision that legalized abortion in the United States. Whether your views are pro-life or pro-choice, Roe v Wade protects all pregnant women – those who want abortions and those who want to continue their pregnancies. In fact, it affects all women, period. And a new study tells why.

Every inauguration takes place at the crossroads of hope and history. President Obama’s second inauguration today is a reminder that every president, and in fact, every citizen needs that essential combination – hope and history – combined with action to achieve anything of value. As a country, we stand together at a time when political strife, global insecurity and international anxiety could get the better of us, if not for the hope we feel and evidence we see that we’re all headed for better days ahead.
