When we arrived at Mt Meru hospital at 8:45am this morning it was already bustling with activity. I was surprised but pleased to see construction well underway in what had been the parking lot when we last visited.
We caught the Regional Medical Officer (RMO) at 9am just as he was running off to a meeting but agreed to reconvene at noon. So, we decided to kill a few hours productively and went to visit a vocational training school that our WRA friend Mackrine had told us about that takes in single mothers under the age of 18 and their children between 1 and 2 years of age.

South Africa was fantastic--so glad I was able to get off the set and spend some time seeing great programs in action while there. Since I was already on the African continent, I decided to make my way up to Tanzania. It's only four countries away from South Africa but a full day's travel. I left Cape Town at dawn and arrived into Kilimanjaro Airport in the evening, twelve hours later, as the sun was setting. There is nothing like the golden hour here...

So my day job brought me to South Africa this week and I was able to take advantage of a late call time today to visit the main offices of Mothers2Mothers.
M2M was founded right here in Cape Town in 2001 (I happened to meet one of their co-founders, Robin Smalley in New York last fall). M2M has an amazing Mentor Mothers program where they have successfully been integrating HIV positive mothers into their organization as a means to empowering women while utilizing the moms who have joined and benefitted from their services (which include testing, psycho-social counseling and the management of Antiretroviral treatment (ARV) themselves). These moms have a unique set of needs that traditional physicians and clinicians are generally unable and not trained to provide. They also have a unique set of strengths that allow them to break down barriers to care - most importantly the fact that they have personal experience and often come from the communities they are serving.
