We at Hope Phones and our friends at EveryMotherCounts challenge your family to gather old cell phones from your neighbors while trick-or-treating this year. The funds raised from recycling them will support a program to connect mothers and babies to medical care in the developing world.

Just as I was finally taking a week to unwind late this summer, I got another one of those calls that changed my life. Our friends at Crowdrise checked in to ask, "Does Every Mother Counts want ten spots in the NYC Marathon?" There was no question that we did, but what I didn't realize was that I would also be running. Crowdrise is a crowd-sourcing platform through that we have been working with since Mother's Day and more recently worked with to raise funds to send a container of medical supplies to South Sudan. Being the great partners they are, they were offered several slots for the marathon to be used for charities and nicely thought of us.

Leading global cosmetic brand Maybelline New York along with leading Italian jeweler Roberto Coin and top probiotic beverage manufacturer Lifeway Foods, have come on board to sponsor fashion icon and global maternal health advocate Christy Turlington Burns as she participates in the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 6. All proceeds will benefit Every Mother Counts, the advocacy and mobilization campaign founded by Turlington Burns in 2010, to increase public awareness and support for improved maternal and child health.

When I set out to make the documentary No Woman, No Cry my hope was that once more people knew the facts and saw the women behind the shocking global statistics, that they would ask, "What can I do?" I had asked myself this very same question when I learned that hundreds of thousands of women die needlessly each year around the world from pregnancy and childbirth-related complications. For me, the part that inspired me to take action, was learning that almost all of these deaths are preventable. In fact, ninety percent of them!

Fashion icon and global maternal health advocate Christy Turlington Burns, along with a team of 9 other individuals, is participating in the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 6 to raise money and awareness for her non-profit organization, Every Mother Counts (EMC). To further her commitment and elevate awareness for maternal and child health Christy is calling on supporters everywhere to create their own team, and participate in a 5K run/walk in their own town during the official ING New York City Marathon while the EMC team hits the pavement in New York City.
