Summer: a time that was once revered for rest and relaxation is now just three months of frantic scheduling, intense heat, and late nights. Like many of you, I am a busy working mom and often find it difficult to maintain the juggling act of soccer schedules, work deadlines, and a balanced diet. With our hurried schedules, it is so important that we make conscience choices about what we feed our bodies. When consulting with women and families, I often encourage the incorporation of following nutrient dense foods, to give us a balanced diet:

The 2012 Olympic games came to a close last night in London. The past two weeks were a rollercoaster of athletic and emotional ups and downs for many athletes, now returning home to proud families. Some athletes have kids waiting to greet their medal-winning mothers. Of the thirteen mothers on the US Olympic team, seven lucky women are leaving London with medals. Kerri Walsh Jennings, Christie Rampone, Candace Parker, and Kristin Armstrong received gold medals, Lashinda Demus (mother of twins!), Tayyiba Haneef-Park and Danielle Scott-Arruda won silvers and Indian boxer, Mary Kom received a bronze. Whether they took home medals or not, it was inspiring to watch mothers from around the world compete in the games!

Cutting for Stone made a splash with readers when it came out in 2009. Not only is is a fantastic read, propelling it to bestseller lists all over, but the topic of the novel hits close to home for us. The story all begins with a maternal death in Ethiopia and tracks the impact that that death had on those left behind—the children, the partners, the friends. Ethiopia continues to be a country of focus for the maternal health community because it is one of the highest burden countries for maternal death and also for life-altering maternal morbidities such as fistula. In 2010, there were 9000 maternal deaths in Ethiopia, leaving women with a 1 in 67 lifetime risk of dying in childbirth. This is a vast improvement in fact- in 1990 there were 950 deaths per 100,000 live births but that number has now dropped to just 350 per 100,000. It's still 350 too many.

Summers are usually jam packed with memories. Whether your kids go to camp, you’re visiting or hosting family, or you’re taking a trip far away, it's important to document these experiences to capture the memories. My friend Charmaine Burden founded her company, Happy Scrappy Books, a few years ago after struggling to do this for her family. We caught up with Charmaine to ask for some scrapbooking tips to help us all do the same.

Join us to raise awareness on the hundreds of thousands of girls and women around the world who die each year from complications in pregnancy and childbirth. We run so others don’t have to. We have spots available, and will provide the t-shirt and training tips in exchange for your commitment to raise awareness and funds. Or if you're already running a race and want to run on behalf of EMC, let us know too!

Fall is inching near us. Pretty soon, we will be saying goodbye to the heat and hello to crisp, cooler air. Colorful leaves will fall and make us aware of the changes ahead. Most of us will think about rearranging our closets so that our jackets, sweaters and long sleeve shirts are within arm’s reach. And some will finally think about putting away your stylish maternity and nursing clothes because you just don’t need them anymore. Yet you wonder what do to with them. You don’t want to throw them away because you spent good money on them. You would give them to a friend, but they are also done having kids. Garage sales are way too much effort, and posting on Ebay also takes a lot of time.

By Amy, Using Our Words, "But on Saturday afternoon, Christy Turlington, who was speaking on a panel about her charity Every Mother Counts, used a phrase that lit a fire inside of me. “The sisterhood of motherhood” Yes. Yes! That, that is what I believe in."

When I travelled to Uganda in March 2012 with the partners from Saving Mothers, Giving Life, I met Boniconsilla Komugisha. Bonnie is a hard working nurse who is committed to improving maternal health in her community within the district of Kibale, one of the target districts for SMGL. Since I returned, she's been keeping me up to date on how her work is progressing. She has written about her joy in being able to serve more women these days but also the challenges that this work can impose. This week she shared how the latest outbreak of the Ebola virus (a deadly and highly contagious virus associated with fever, bleeding and diarrhea) has impacted her district.
