No Mothers Day Press

As an alternative to the traditional Mother’s Day celebration, our No Mothers Day campaign garnered significant press across a variety of different outlets including national broadcast, fashion publications, business/tech, lifestyle, mom bloggers and so on. The idea behind No Mothers Day was to ask mothers across the country to “disappear” for the day in solidarity with at-risk women around the world. Our hope was that doing so on Mother’s Day—the one day when people think about mothers the most—would show others just how much a mother is missed when she is gone. While the campaign garnered its share of critiques and questions, we started a national conversation about the hundreds of thousands of women who die as a result of complications in pregnancy and childbirth each year. A sample of the key media hits is below:

"No Flowers for Turlington Burns This Mother’s Day"

Her No Mothers Day Mother's Day is a way to draw attention to maternal mortality, the cause at the heart of the Every Mother Counts advocacy campaign she founded in 2010. It's also a way to get back to the basics and, hopefully, cut through "all the noise" that now comes with a holiday that the National Retail Federation estimates will come with an $18.6 billion price tag in spending by Americans this year.

CNN

"This year, make it 'No Mothers Day'"

The World Health Organization estimates that some 360,000 girls and women die worldwide each year from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications. Nearly all of these deaths are preventable. It's not that they are preventable if we find a cure. and it's not that they are preventable if we extend expensive lifelong treatment regiments.

"Supermodel Christy Turlington Burns Defends Her Campaign to Boycott Mother’s Day"

Going silent, Turlington Burns explains, is just one of the ways women can support the cause this Mother’s Day.  They can change their Facebook profile to raise awareness about maternal health. Or they can refuse gifts and instead ask family to donate money to causes that support vulnerable girls and women. ‘By no means did I expect everyone would jump on board…we always say the best thing people can do is to use your voice…be mindful of the way you do or don’t use your voice.’

The United States currently ranks 50th in the world for maternal health. It is safer to give birth in Bosnia or Kuwait than in California. But what we do here ultimately affects women everywhere. This is a matter of inequality and political will.

"No Gifts, No Cards, No Status Updates: A New Campaign Asks Moms to go Silent on Mother’s Day"

Victoria Davies, Managing Partner of CHI & Partners New York, asks ‘Do we think that women will actually go silent? I don’t know. I’d love them to, I understand if they don’t, but I want them to talk about it. We’re trying to force the right kind of global discussion on the importance of motherhood.’
