Learn How Transportation Impacts Maternal Health

Some of you think we’re crazy to run the ING New York marathon two years in a row, but to those of us running for Every Mother Counts it makes perfect sense.  We run so mothers in developing countries don’t have to walk.  It isn't unusual for women to have to travel 26.2 miles (the distance run during a full marathon) while in labor to reach a birth center or hospital.  With no cars, buses, taxis, motorcycles or other forms of transportation, these women have no choice but to walk.  Many of our supporters are running and walking 5Ks, which represents the average distance pregnant women walk to reach a healthcare provider.  It’s distances like these that mean the difference between life and death for too many mothers in the world.  To learn more about how transportation impacts maternal health, explore this education module.  Learn as much or as little as you like and share the information with your friends. And if you’re inspired, walk or run with us (or sponsor a runner) so other mothers don’t have to.
