It’s been a few days since the tragedy in Boston and one of our Team EMC runners who was there that day is now ready to tells her story. Julie Smolyansky shares her mile-by-mile blog about how her race morphed from celebration to confusion and terror. Check out her story here.

Our focus and hearts were already in Boston hours before we heard today’s horrible news. Three of team EMC’s most dedicated runners were racing in the Boston Marathon and we knew they were nearing the finish line.

Last fall we interviewed many of our Team EMC New York marathon runners to find out why they run and why they run for Every Mother Counts. Even though the NY Marathon didn’t turn out exactly as planned, many of our teammates have continued running in marathons all over the country. This weekend, three of our biggest supporters and most dedicated runners are participating in the Boston Marathon.˜

This weekend, Wei Wei and I attended the second Zooma race of 2013 in Austin, Texas. Zooma hosts all-women running events in resort settings all over the country, providing women get-away-weekend opportunities to race, bond, enjoy spa services and share their passion for running. This weekend hosted about 1300 women.

It’s Marathon Season again! This weekend, runners will be taking over three of our favorite cities, fundraising for Every Mother Counts and raising awareness that for millions of women distance greatly impacts their ability to get healthcare during pregnancy and labor.

We have been working hard over the last few weeks preparing something that we couldn’t be more proud of – our 2012 Impact Report. This report spells out exactly what we’ve been doing all year to bring our mission to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother to life. It’s a testament to how your support, donations and participation have helped us make great strides toward reaching our goals. We hope it also conveys our commitment to you, our supporters and donors to be 100% accountable. We’re paying attention to every thing you do to help us reduce maternal mortality and we’re tracking every mile run, dollar donated and action taken.

Distance is one of the biggest barriers to maternal care for women in the developing world—and we hope that with every mile we run for EMC, that is one less mile a pregnant woman needs to travel to get the care she needs to deliver her baby. Today, we’ve got even more reasons for you to join the team and run with us. A month ago we met Brae Blackley, corporate attorney turned mother, runner, and Executive Director of ZOOMA Women’s Race Series. ZOOMA is a national series of boutique women’s 5K/10Ks and marathons at awesome resorts in locations like Amelia Island in Florida, Cape Cod, and Austin.

Thanksgiving is only one week away. As you polish the silver and pull out the china, give a little thought to what made you happy this year. And next Thursday, as you sit down to dinner with your friends and family, think about what this holiday really means. It’s about gratitude, pure and simple.

Yesterday, Sunday, November 18th, Team EMC ran the Philadelphia Marathon & Half Marathon. After the NYC marathon was canceled due to the disaster caused by Hurricane Sandy, Philadelphia opened it’s doors to NYC runners and many of our team were able to get their marathon fix and join other runners who were already out there representing EMC.

After Hurricane Sandy hit, it was an emotional time for all. Personally, I was so excited to run the NYC Marathon for Team Every Mother Counts and even more because I run for my sister who passed after giving birth 5 years ago. When I ran the marathon last year with everyone from Every Mother Counts, I’d never felt such sisterhood before. When I felt low my teammates helped push me forward and I did the same for them.
