Mother’s Day was inspired in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe as The Mother’s Peace Day – a day to honor women’s contributions to shaping politics and creating familial and societal peace. Julia authored the Battle Hymn of the Republic, but we think a proclamation she created calling for disarmament and for mothers to united to stop senseless war, is even more powerful:

We’re nurses and it’s our responsibility to monitor our patients and put their care and treatment plans into action, but there’s a whole lot more to it than simply taking notes and following directions.

Last week we blogged about a set of premature twins delivered while Christy and Clancy were in Haiti. They were born in a hospital that was unequipped to provide the long-term respiratory support premies need and were transferred by ambulance to a hospital an hour-and-a-half away. We said a prayer, hoped for the best and sent compassionate, healing thoughts to the twins and their mother.
