The Every Mother Counts CD compilation features 15 songs by 14 mother/musicians. We asked them to contribute an original song or a cover around the theme of motherhood.
It could be anything they wanted, and many chose to tackle lullabies or wrote songs for their children. Early on, I worried a bit about an album supporting an issue as serious as maternal mortality, as it could potentially become a heavy listen. But thankfully I found the resulting record veers back and forth between the sweet and the bittersweet, capturing a richness and a greater complexity – exactly like life.

We arrived in Seattle yesterday morning to clear skies and sunshine, leaving rainy New York City behind (didn’t expect that!). We headed straight to the Gates foundation where I was invited by Dr. Gary Darmstadt, Director of the Family Health Division to screen a clip of No Woman, No Cry and give a brief talk during a town hall about social and behavioral change. It was my first visit to the foundation and an exciting opportunity for me to share my observations about these particular barriers through my experience making the film. It was such a thrill to finally visit the Gates Foundation after admiring their work for so long.

No Woman, No Cry a new documentary produced and directed by first-time filmmaker Christy Turlington Burns, will have its television debut on OWN; Oprah Winfrey Network Saturday May 7, at 9:30 p.m. (ET/PT) the evening before Mother’s Day. The emotionally charged film follows the stories of women in Tanzania, Bangladesh, Guatemala and the United States as they face critical junctures in their pregnancies. The film explores the barriers millions of women face when trying to access critical care throughout their pregnancies and while delivering, along with the often simple solutions that could save their lives.
Turlington Burns, a mother, activist, women’s health advocate and fashion icon, made the film in conjunction with EVERY MOTHER COUNTS (EMC), a five-year outreach campaign she founded in 2010 that is dedicated to improving maternal health and reducing maternal mortality around the world by engaging the public, raising awareness and driving action.

I arrived in Washington, DC yesterday for the much anticipated and first ever, TEDWomen Conference. TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Through its annual conferences along with TEDx and TEDTalks video site, it provides an incredible forum for people to connect with one another across all platforms. I am here at TEDWomen both as an attendee but also as a special correspondent for one of TED’s partners for this conference, AOL. With so many highlights from the first day of the conference, you’ll have to bear with me as I recap some of my favorite moments, some of which are from the interviews I conducted (which I’ll be sharing as they become available), others which are small excerpts from select speakers. It reads a bit frenetically but that’s sort of consistent with the experience. One minute your brow is wrinkled in thought, the next you’re laughing or recognizing yourself in a shared experience, the next you’re tapping your toe to a musical performance. It moves pretty fast but wow - it works.
