Saving Mothers, Giving Life has a brand new website and we’re proud to give them a shout-out. It’s beautiful, inspiring and we think it looks really smart. Saving Mothers, Giving Life was launched with the goal of supporting countries where women are dying at alarming rates during pregnancy and childbirth and to aggressively reduce maternal mortality.

The Super Bowl is one if those events that brings Americans together. Even if your hometown team didn't make it to the end, like one of mine did, you find something in one of the teams to root for. I felt particularly anxious for the mother whose two sons both gave it their all as they coached the competing teams, the Niners and Ravens through a historic game at the Super Dome in New Orleans last night. Just seven years after Hurricane Katrina survivors sought refuge in the Dome, we watched New Orleans host a game that was unprecedented on many levels. Here are a few parts of the game we found particularly moving, amazing, inspiring and just a little bit sad.

As we enter February and inch our way toward spring together, we aim to warm our hearts and sharpen our minds. Winter is birthday season in my family. Between us, my husband and I celebrated my birthday, my sister's birthday and his birthday in January. In February, there are even more birthdays, beginning with my nephew's, then my sister-in-law, my son, my younger sister and last but not least my brother-in-law! There is a lot to celebrate and so much to be grateful for always, but there is nothing like birth days to make one consider and appreciate just how wonderful it is to be alive, to be human, to be healthy…

We’ve been convinced for a long time that birth centers are the way to go for many low-risk women seeking to have a safe vaginal birth. A new study now shows that birth centers not only deliver high-quality birth experiences, primarily through midwifery care, but they also drastically lower c-section rates and maternity health care costs.

Courtney Martin is a writer, speaker, editor and all around powerhouse of a woman. We saw her speak at TED Women a few years ago and were completely impressed with her. She had just written a book, Do It Anyway: The New Generation of Activists (Beacon Press, 2010) and was among the founding editors of a site/movement called Feministing. She sent us an email describing that trip and we’re sharing it here.

We mentioned in our February kick-off that we’d be paying close attention to our government leaders and making sure they keep women at the heart of the political process. It appears, President Obama was thinking along the same lines and in fact, he got a head start on us. On Thursday (January 30th), he signed a Presidential Memorandum to strengthen and expand US government capacity and coordination across all agencies to better promote gender equality and empower women and girls.

Every Mother Counts is feeling the love as we enter February. Our theme this month is Every Heart Counts and we’ll be embracing all kinds of matters of the heart. Our biggest focuses will be on how heart health impacts pregnancy, motherhood and women’s long-term health, but we’re concentrating just as hard on the importance of keeping women at the heart of our political processes.

We’ve talked a lot lately about the value of yoga and meditation to improve your life, health and ability to connect with the world around you. Starting a yoga practice seems pretty straightforward – find a class, rent a DVD, buy a mat and get on with it. Learning to meditate – not so much. There are dozens of ways to meditate from chanting, breath-awareness and mindfulness practices to staring into a crackling fire or knitting. So how do you get started? With a few simple techniques.

Despite our focus on global reach and far away places, I’m reminded time and again how very small the world is. My recent conversation with actress, Amy Brenneman revolved around her recent trip to Peru with CARE (one of our favorite humanitarian organizations), and served as a reminder that the world is only as big as you want it to be and most of it is common ground.
