Amnesty International

What's the barrier? The U.S. ranks 50th in the world in terms of maternal health.  To save women’s lives here at home, we need to know more about why they’re dying.

What is the goal? Educate members about the Maternal Health Accountability Act – which would help establish systematic datacollection, review and accountability in the U.S. maternal health care system.

Where? This bill will help us improve our data collection on maternal health right here in the U.S.

How can you help? At your No Woman No Cry watch party, write Amnesty International’s Mother’s Day action cards to your Representative and Senators!

 Write Mother’s Day action cards

Amnesty International’s oldest and most time-tested tool is the individual, hand-written letter, calling on authorities to uphold human rights. Mother’s Day action cards are a twist on that traditional idea. We’re writing them to Representatives and Senators to educate them about the Maternal Health Accountability Act.

AIUSA will send you cards and case sheets, you write the cards at your No Woman No Cry watch party, then send them back to AIUSA in the envelope provided and they will deliver them to members of Congress on your behalf.

To get started, email AIUSA to tell them how many cards you need for your watch party at  demanddignity@aiusa.org.

More About the Maternal Health Accountability Act

The bipartisan Maternal Health Accountability Act of 2011 (H.R. 894) would help establish a maternal mortality review board in every state, combat disparities in maternal health outcomes with new research and pilot programs, and address severe maternal complications with new data collection and review.  The bill addresses some of the most urgent recommendations of Amnesty International’s groundbreaking report, Deadly Delivery: The Maternal Health Care Crisis in the USA.
