Partners in Health
PIH is an international health care organization that is relentlessly committed to improving the health of the poor and marginalized. We build local capacity and work closely with impoverished communities to deliver high quality health care, address the root causes of illness, train providers, advance research, and advocate for global policy change. PIH was founded in 1987 to address the health care needs of the poor in Haiti. We currently work in Haiti and have expanded operations to eleven other countries: Lesotho, Malawi, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, the United States, the Dominican Republic, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Guatemala and Burundi.
Improving women’s health has always been central to the work of PIH. Our comprehensive model of care seeks to make birth and pregnancy less dangerous for poor women by training and staffing a strong network of community health workers, strengthening the quality and quantity of services provided through public clinics and district hospitals, and providing cash transfers and logistical assistance to help women reach health facilities. PIH seeks to enhance the rights, power, and opportunities for women by addressing the acute and chronic causes of maternal mortality.
Our work begins with the patient before us but extends far beyond to the transformation of communities, health systems, and global health policy. Through collaboration with leading medical and academic institutions, we work to research, document and disseminate our approach. Through advocacy efforts aimed at global health funders and policymakers, we seek to raise the standard for what is possible in the delivery of health care in the poorest corners of the world.
