Every Mother Counts is a non-profit dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. Every Mother Counts informs, engages, and mobilizes new audiences to take actions and raise funds that support maternal health programs around the world. This position will be based New York, with moderate travel, reporting to the founder/CEO. 

The Director of Development will spearhead development efforts as Every Mother Counts continues to grow. A new position in the organization, the Director of Development will have the opportunity to create and build a full-functioning development department for the organization.


Administrative/Planning (40%)

  • Develop and execute Every Mother Counts’ annual fundraising plan
  • Direct the annual fund program, including mailings and annual fundraising drives and social media strategies
  • Create office systems to support all Development operations
  • Manage the implementation of Salesforce and maintain data entry and gift processing
  • Oversee grant seeking including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements
  • Maintain gift recognition programs
  • Become deeply familiar with Every Mother Counts’ programs to connect donors with the mission

Major Donor/Stakeholder Management (40%)

  • Establish a national major prospect solicitation pipeline of individuals, foundations and corporations
  • Oversee prospect research, including due diligence
  • Developing and tracking proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors in all development and fundraising endeavors
  • Grow a major gifts program including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors
  • Build the planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts

Networking/Travel (20%)

  • Meet prospective donors and supporters on a continual basis to establish effective communications with them
  • Attending community events related to donor cultivation


  • At least 5-7 years experience working in development
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree a plus
  • Expertise with Salesforce
  • Knowledge of women’s health and international development issues
  • Entrepreneurial spirit; does not mind unstructured and sometimes unpredictable environments
  • Experience developing and maintaining productive working relationships with board members, donors, and community members
  • Superior writing and editing skills
  • Strong project management and ability to self motivate and direct
